The DO is equally educated with the same premedical undergraduate training, four years of osteopathic medical school plus completion of internship and residency programs. Many DOs do clinical rotations and residencies side-by-side with their MD counterparts. Both DOs and MDs are fully qualified physicians licensed to prescribe medication and perform surgery. However the DOs practice a “whole person” approach to medicine. Disease is evaluated in terms of how it affects the entire body, not simply parts of the body. The body is treated as an integrated whole. DO medical schools emphasize primary care with a focus on preventive healthcare. In addition, DOs receive extra training in the musculoskeletal system so they can work with patients to better understand ways that an illness or injury in one part of the body can affect another.
